About Mountain Home Made
Mountain Home Made was started in 2016 by Debbi Fugal.
I have made quilts for over 50 years. My first quilt I made “all by myself” when I was 15 years old. The quilt was for my mom; she had just had back surgery and I wanted to make her something special. At the time, I had a job working at the local bakery and I used my paycheck to buy two king-sized flat sheets and a roll of batting.
My father had made her a set of wooden quilting frames and I used them to “put the quilt on”. I then used a skein of yarn to tie it all together. I left the back at least two inches larger all the way around so I could roll it over the front and sew it down with a zig-zag stitch. It was done—well, I thought it was done!
I gave it to her; she was so happy that she cried. She looked at every corner of the quilt and I was not sure what she was looking for. Then she told me: “You did not put a label on your quilt. Always label your quilts so those you give them to know where they come from and if it ever gets lost, it can come home.”
I have continued to make quilts throughout my life, only stopping to work professionally for 42 years for the Federal Government, but I’ve been retired since 2014. Along with making a label for each quilt, I have kept a journal of each quilt made since 2014. As of August 2020, I’m currently working on quilt number 213.
Mountain Home Made was born in 2016 to share my love of sewing and quilt making. In addition to making quilts, I share my knowledge with others by showing them how to make quilts and teaching them techniques. As you peruse this website, keep in mind that many of the items shown here are meant to encourage you to challenge yourself, step outside of your comfort zone, and to try something new. I’m willing to help you work through your projects or teach you new skills!
Mountain Home Made is available to make your idea for quilt come to life. From T-shirt quilts, to Double Wedding Ring quilts, the possibilities are endless! Check out examples of both in the Quilt Gallery.
